A New Era for Copernicus: Earth Observation Competition Searching for Outstanding Application Ideas

The Copernicus Masters competition will give recognition to outstanding ideas, applications, and business concepts that utilise Earth observation data for commercial purposes and socially relevant projects. Along with cash prizes, the winners will receive technical support in realising their ideas, access to satellite data, and start-up support from a prize pool worth a total of more than EUR 300,000. In 2014, for the first time, the Copernicus Masters is carried out on a worldwide basis. With his idea for radar based landmark navigation for highly automated driving, Harmut Runge from the Remote Sensing Technology Institute (IMF) of the EOC, DLR was named the winner of the "BMW ConnectedDrive Challenge" as well as the overall winner of Copernicus Masters competition 2013. This year's overall winner - the Copernicus Master 2014 - will be selected from among all challenge winners (except the Best Service Challenge) by a panel of high-ranking experts and receive an additional cash prize of EUR 20,000. It's here: UrtheCast's first release of Earth imagery, from space

The winner of the T-Systems Cloud Computing Challenge 2011, UrtheCast, has released two images which mark only the first of millions. Soon, they bring a virtually endless stream of unprecedented Earth imagery, captured from the International Space Station (ISS). Captured on March 28, 2014, by their medium-resolution camera, Theia, the scrolling image above is centered around the city of Moneague, Jamaica. The photo covers about 300 square kilometers of terrain and gives a remarkable glimpse at what's to come from this powerful perspective on planet Earth ...
