Food watch from Space - How Satellites Support Agriculture

Agriculture forms the basis of our food supply. However, it is subject to several challenges, from increasing pressure on soils, water availability, vagaries of weather and climate to unsustainable farming practices. Farmers often face challenges because of water shortages, expensive fertilisers and other chemical products, which also have a negative impact on the environment. Satellite-based imagery can be helpful in pinpointing problematic areas and drive specific hot-spot surveys.
Also, they can highlight trend anomalies when comparing different years ...
European Space Imaging & Skybox Imaging are looking for applications utilising the sub-daily availability of VHR, multispectral satellite data

The European Space Imaging & Skybox Imaging High-Res Challenge invites the remote sensing community to create new and viable application ideas utilising the sub-daily availability of very high-resolution (VHR), multispectral satellite data from the Skybox Imaging satellite constellation. European Space Imaging and Skybox Imaging are looking for ideas that have global impact, are easily scalable, and enable more efficient decision-making. The winner will be awarded a European Space Imaging data package of Skybox Imaging satellite imagery worth up to EUR 20,000 for use in further developing the winning application ...
European Space Imaging and partner GAF AG win major European Commission contract

European Space Imaging announced that the company has signed a multi-year framework supply contract with the European Commission for the provision of very high-resolution satellite data and associated services in support of the European Union's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) ...
Success Story: European Space Imaging High-Res Challenge 2013

Györk Fülöp, landscape planner and geo-data expert from Hungary, has come up with an idea called Certification of Agronomy for Marketing Environment-Friendly Agriculture (CAMEA). His idea focuses on adding value to environmentally friendly agronomic activities producing crops with a smaller ecological footprint and certifying this activity. The technical basis of his concept is centred on the synergies between Copernicus datasets and WorldView-2 satellite images for crop monitoring ...
CloudEO Farming Challenge

CloudEO invites participants to submit exciting and promising business ideas for commercial geo-services in agriculture and forestry. The proposed services need not, but can make use of the unique data, software, and infrastructure environment CloudEO provides. CloudEO will grant efficient access to all types of satellite, aerial, and weather data (including from Sentinel satellites) and a powerful development and processing environment. The winner will be rewarded with a EUR 3,000 cash prize, six months of access to a free standard workbench for development and production on CloudEO, marketing support through the CloudEO web store, and active business support from CloudEO ...
CloudEO Starts 'Virtual Constellation' Access with Beta Online Marketplace

CloudEO has released the beta version of its online marketplace for Earth observation-based products. By supplying data on a pay-per-use or subscription basis, the company is working to bring together imagery providers, analytics companies and customers through one platform. green spin - ESA BIC Bavaria start up offers satellite based solutions for an efficient agriculture

Modern agricultural companies face many difficult questions in their day-to-day activities. Where and when should they buy or sell agricultural commodities? How will prices evolve in the coming weeks or months? Will their crops grow as planned? How much fertilizer do they need? These issues are complicated by globalisation and weather-related risks. green spin, a company currently undergoing incubation at ESA BIC Bavaria, helps businesses tackle these challenges with web-based and mobile services that deliver fast, precise, and independent crop-related information at the field, country, or global level ...
Space for Nature

Information from Earth-observing satellites is being used to protect and sustainably manage our natural resources. Located in Vietnam, on the eastern slope of the Annamite mountains, the Huong Son is a tropical forest subject to logging activities. While extracting timber from the forest is important to the local economy, unsustainable logging practices can negatively affect forest carbon sequestration, soil erosion, water recycling and, in turn, the local economy ...
