T-Systems Open Telekom Cloud Challenge
T-Systems International GmbH will award the prize for its Open Telekom Cloud Challenge to the best Copernicus application or service idea, established during a four-week sandbox exercise on the public Open Telekom Cloud service. The exercise will be held on a public cloud designed to derive on-demand intelligence from Earth observation data. After submitting their promising service ideas, entrants will be selected and invited to a training and interaction session at the start of the exercise. The cloud will be able to provide satellite data, analytics tools, standard interfaces, and workflow management to assist the participants in creating new services. T-Systems was particularly interested in solutions that offer benefits to European citizens and their public administrations, which face challenges in meeting increased demand for mobility, urban logistics, tourism, and more while simultaneously reducing negative environmental impacts. The most professional implementations that use Sentinel data in combination with other data sources on the public cloud platform will be considered for the prize.
Submission was possible from 1 April to 30 June 2017, all completed proposals are undergoing evaluation at the moment.

Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) is an attractive source of low-cost and flexible on-demand IT resources. Public cloud solutions hosted by US-based providers have proved particularly popular. There are misgivings about such offerings, however – particularly since terms and conditions of US-based providers not always sufficiently protect consumers and the European Court of Justice ruled the Safe Harbor agreement invalid. Against this background, cloud services retain their appeal, but only in combination with robust data privacy and security.
The new Open Telekom Cloud, a public cloud IaaS offering from T-Systems, is a solution that combines the benefits of a public cloud with the security of a private cloud. The Open Telekom Cloud offers the simplicity, scalability and cost-efficiency of public cloud services based on the strict German standards for data protection and privacy. The cloud services are based on the OpenStack open source platform, avoiding any vendor lock-ins and unnecessary licence fees. Resources from the Open Telekom Cloud can be easily integrated into existing IT environments via standard published interfaces (APIs). The offering includes computing, storage, network, security, and management services. Resources from the Open Telekom Cloud can be provisioned and scaled up and down within minutes, offering immense flexibility.
In the future, Copernicus services will be available in completely new dimensions through the use of extensive monitoring data from space and sensor networks that can be processed in near-real time. Providing future Copernicus services like these to a wide variety of users and industries will entail building on big data and cloud computing technologies to create commercially attractive and sustainable services.
